The short answer
Best ball is a fantasy football format where you draft a team and never touch it again. No setting lineups. No waiver wire. No trade offers at 2 AM. Each week, the platform automatically picks your highest-scoring players and slots them into your starting lineup. Your job begins and ends on draft day.
That's it. You draft, then watch it play out over 17 weeks. It's the purest test of drafting skill in fantasy football, and it's why millions of players have made it their favorite format.
How best ball works
- You draft a teamJoin a league and draft a roster, usually 18 to 20 players across QB, RB, WR and TE. Most leagues have 12 teams, and the draft is the only decision you make all season. Drafts are either slow (hours per pick) or fast (live, with a pick clock), depending on the platform.
- The platform sets your lineupEvery week, the system looks at your whole roster and starts whoever scored the most. In regular fantasy, a 35-point game from your bench is wasted. In best ball, those points count, so you never leave points on the bench.
- The best teams advanceIn tournaments like Underdog's Best Ball Mania, the top scorers in each league advance to playoff rounds in Weeks 15 through 17, where huge prize pools are decided. Standalone leagues simply crown the highest total scorer.
What does a best ball roster look like?
Rosters are deeper than in traditional fantasy because you need backups everywhere. There are no waiver pickups when someone gets hurt. Each week your starting lineup is pulled automatically from the full roster:
To fill an 18 to 20 player roster, drafters typically take 2 to 3 QBs, 5 to 7 RBs, 6 to 8 WRs and 2 to 3 TEs.
Best ball vs. traditional fantasy football
| Best ball | Traditional redraft | |
|---|---|---|
| Set lineups weekly | No, it's automatic | Yes, every week |
| Waiver wire | None | Weekly pickups |
| Trades | None | All season |
| Roster size | 18 to 20 players | 15 to 16 players |
| Time commitment | Draft day only | Hours every week |
| What gets rewarded | Upside and ceiling | Floor and consistency |
| Bench points | Count when they're your best | Wasted |
Why best ball changes how you value players
In traditional fantasy, you want steady players who give you a safe floor. A receiver who scores 12 points every Sunday is gold because you know what you're getting when you start him.
Best ball flips that. Because the platform picks your best scorers after the fact, a boom-or-bust player who scores 3 one week and 30 the next is worth more than the steady 12-point guy. The 30-point weeks get captured. The 3-point duds are ignored because someone on your bench outscored them.
Even the best players miss a lot of weeks. Here is what the 2025 starters at each position actually looked like week to week:
| Top scorers | Games | Starter weeks | Other weeks | Best week | Worst week |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| QB Top 12 | 15.8 | 8.6 | 7.3 | 34.5 | 7.2 |
| RB Top 24 | 15.8 | 10.3 | 5.5 | 32.2 | 4.1 |
| WR Top 24 | 15.3 | 7.6 | 7.6 | 27.2 | 2.4 |
| TE Top 12 | 15.1 | 7.6 | 7.5 | 24.1 | 2.0 |
Averages for the season's top scorers at each position, Weeks 1-17, half-PPR (Underdog) scoring. A starter week is a top-12 QB or TE finish, or a top-24 RB or WR finish, that week.
A top-24 receiver finished as a weekly starter only about half the time. In redraft, you have to guess which half. In best ball, your roster covers the other weeks automatically, which is why depth and upside matter more than consistency.
That changes how you draft. Big-play receivers, volatile target shares and touchdown upside become assets instead of liabilities. Backup running backs who would sit on a redraft bench all year become valuable depth that can inherit a workload and deliver a league-winning stretch.
The golden rule
Draft for ceiling, not floor. The format rewards the weeks your players go off and forgives the weeks they don't.
Why best ball is so popular
- Zero in-season work
- No scrambling to set lineups before kickoff and no waiver alarms at 4 AM on Wednesday. Draft once and enjoy the season.
- Massive tournaments
- Platforms like Underdog run tournaments with millions in prize money, and a single entry has turned casual drafters into millionaires.
- Pure draft skill
- No lucky waiver pickups or lopsided trades to bail out a bad draft. Best ball is the purest test of preseason evaluation and roster construction.
- No bench heartbreak
- That backup QB who throws four touchdowns on your bench? In best ball, those points count.
Where can you play best ball?
Several platforms run best ball leagues and tournaments, each with slightly different rules, roster sizes and entry fees:
| Platform | Scoring | Known for |
|---|---|---|
| Underdog | Half PPR, 18 rounds | The biggest best ball platform, home to Best Ball Mania, Weekly Winners and The Eliminator |
| DraftKings | Full PPR with yardage bonuses, 20 rounds | Many tournament sizes, including sit-and-go contests |
| FFPC | TE premium (1.5 PPR for tight ends), 20 rounds | The original high-stakes best ball destination |
| Drafters | Varies by contest | A newer platform with competitive prize pools and a growing community |
How does scoring work?
Best ball scoring follows standard fantasy rules. Most platforms use half PPR (0.5 points per reception) or full PPR (1 point per reception). The difference isn't the scoring itself; it's that the platform applies those scores to your best possible lineup each week.
If you drafted three quarterbacks and one scores 35 while the others score 12 and 8, only the 35 counts in your QB slot. Your lineup is always optimized after the fact. Most platforms skip kickers and team defenses; best ball is all quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers and tight ends.
| Player | 20+ weeks | Games | PPG |
|---|---|---|---|
| QB Josh Allen | 11 | 16 | 23.4 |
| QB Drake Maye | 10 | 16 | 21.5 |
| QB Dak Prescott | 10 | 16 | 20.2 |
| RB Christian McCaffrey | 9 | 16 | 22.3 |
| QB Matthew Stafford | 9 | 16 | 20.7 |
| QB Trevor Lawrence | 8 | 16 | 20.4 |
| RB Bijan Robinson | 8 | 16 | 20.3 |
| QB Caleb Williams | 8 | 16 | 19.2 |
Weeks 1-17, half-PPR (Underdog) scoring. Quarterbacks dominate raw 20-point weeks, which is why only one of them starts each week.
Key concepts every best ball player should know
- Stacking
- Drafting a quarterback with one or more of his pass catchers. When he throws a touchdown to your receiver, you score twice on one play, which raises your team's weekly ceiling.
- Exposure
- If you draft many teams, exposure is the share of them that include a given player. Managing it spreads your risk while keeping conviction on the players you believe in. The portfolio tracker does the math for you.
- Spike weeks
- The explosive games that separate best ball winners from the field. These performances are the engine behind advancing in tournaments.
- Roster construction
- How you spread your picks across positions: how many QBs, when to load up on receivers. Best ball rewards allocation strategies that differ a lot from traditional fantasy.
Frequently asked questions
Is best ball free to play?
It depends on the platform. Many sites offer free best ball leagues alongside paid tournaments. Entry fees for paid contests typically range from $3 to $250 or more, with prize pools scaled to match. You can practice for free right here with our mock draft simulator.
Can I make trades or pick up free agents?
No. In standard best ball formats your roster is locked once the draft is over. There are no trades, no waiver wire and no free agent pickups, which is why drafting well and building depth matters so much.
How many teams are in a best ball league?
Most best ball leagues have 12 teams, though some platforms offer smaller leagues. In tournaments, your 12-team league is only the first round: top finishers advance into larger groups against winners from other leagues.
What's the difference between best ball and DFS?
Daily fantasy (DFS) has you build a new salary-cap lineup every week. Best ball is season-long: you draft once and ride that roster through Week 17. It is structured like traditional fantasy, with the hands-off simplicity that attracts DFS players.
When does best ball draft season start?
Most platforms open best ball drafts for the next season in the winter, soon after the NFL season ends. Activity picks up after the NFL Draft in April and peaks in August before the season. Drafting early can find value before the market reacts to offseason news.
